Sweet Funny Valentine

You’re my funny valentine,

Sweet comic valentine. You make me smile with my heart.

Your looks are laughable, un-photographable, yet, you’re my favorite work of art.

We have all heard this classic Valentine’s song.  What is it about this song that captures the hearts of loved ones around the globe. I know that when I hear this song I think of my own Valentine and even when we are at our worst  and sometimes don’t look or act our best our love is unchanging.

This song was originally sung by Mitzi Green in the role of Susie Ward, the talented young sweetheart of Valentine White (played by Ray Heatherton). In 1939, a film of Babes in Arms, starring Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland, was released. In it, Garland’s character, Patsy, sings the song to Rooney’s character, Mickey.

This song has been reintroduced through out the years by other great artists such as Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, Ella Fitzgerald, and even Michael Buble. Just as each artist brings there own musical style to this timeless classic, this song holds something special for those who harbor it in there heart.

Love Me Tender

Do  you ever wonder what that one song is? Meaning, what is that song that most of the people on the planet feel is romantic?  When you put it that way you might have to tune into the “King”. He made record history in 1956 with a song that most human beings still find relevant and romantic today. He filmed a movie called “The Reno Brothers”, in it he sings, Love Me Tender. The movie was a hit as was all of his movies but the song sold over a million copies in advance of being released! Love Me Tender was number one right out of the gate. In fact the movie was renamed to reflect the song.

Did you enjoy this song as much as the masses? His voice was so mellow and smooth. It is hard to imagine anyone not being effected by this wonderful melody. Even though it was many years ago, it is still current in a younger market. The words are universal and we all want someone to be tender and love us forever. Was it your song? Was it your wedding song? Relive it every time you open your wonderful music box from Music Box Attic.

Just Throw It In the Basement….

“Just throw it in the basement. You never know when we could use it”

We did that with things for over 30 years. It’s remarkable how, even in a large house, you find ways to fill it — and we found ways to fill our basement with food, extra clothes, things that belonged to relatives we couldn’t throw away, tools and knick knacks. We had things in there we didn’t even know we had, just happy to know they were there. And then came Sandy.

Our basement, Oct. 30

A water surge and 4 feet of salty smelly sand flooded it nearly to the ceiling. We couldn’t save much. It was hard to imagine that all the “things” we had been saving would find their way to the curb and the garbage dump.  In the haste to remove the mess, we all got caught up in the removal and it wasn`t until later, when we looked at the photos we had taken for the insurance company, that we we realized just how much was gone.

Needless to say, we were among the lucky ones, since our house was still standing. But it was heart wrenching to see Mike`s Navy uniforms caked in mud and thrown over grandma`s Singer sewing machine from the 1930`s on the street. Weeks later Mike was officially using the bedroom closet on the second floor after 30 years of dressing in the basement when we came upon a memory.  In moving stuff around I heard a familiar sound at my feet.

I looked under a blanket and there it was — my mother`s candy music box - the music box, safe and sound.

It used to be in the basement, part of the “you never know when we could use it” pile. But I had brought it upstairs months earlier after writing about it for the Tomato; in a moment of laziness, I never put it back. I removed the lid and looked at the glass insert, evenly divided into 3 parts.  I smiled with the memory of what I knew  was kept there. My mother loved sweets and she always put tasty ones  in the glass container. One day it might have been gumdrops, M&M`s and Goober peanuts.

Another day it might have been chocolate kisses, mints and sour balls.  It was always filled, until I would sneak a taste of the delectable treats. I would have to make sure to depress the spring so my mother would not hear the music, but other times I would let the beautiful song play out.  Then I would dance around the room as the music slowed to a stop and still savor the sweet in my mouth. “Preserve your memories” Simon & Garfunkel once sang  long ago.

Holding the music box in my arms brought back a time for me, when life was perfect, with only music and sweets to round out the days. I am so happy that this object was saved  from the basement`s fate, and hope that others would find a memory in Sandy`s wake.

This may not be your story but just remember that no matter how they start you are the one who create your own happy ending.

Finally Found the Best Box

This past summer, we opened our home to a Chinese exchange student.  As instructed, I questioned him about his money (so that we could help him budget) and his expected purchases while visiting America.  He told me many times that the only present he would be buying during his trip would be an ipad for his mother.  To my surprise, it is much more inexpensive to purchase one in America rather than China.  We carefully went over his budget, as well as his calendar and I showed him the day he would be visiting the Apple store.  He looked forward to this because he really wanted to buy something special for his mother.  Upon returning from his shopping excursion, I anxiously asked him about the purchase to for his mother.  He explained to me that after speaking with his father, his father said that his mother had always dreamed of having a ballerina music box from America and not an ipad.  He told me how he spent all day looking for one.  He finally found one, and at lunch, he dropped it and broke it, and then he threw it away because it was broken!  I was absolutely sick about this thought, and seeing how sad he was, we got in the car to search for the garbage can that contained the music box hoping we could find a receipt to lead us to the store that sold him the box to purchase a replacement.  We searched for the broken box, no luck.  We then went to the store where he purchased the box, they did not have another.  Speaking with the man at the store, he recommended Music Box Attic. We quickly ordered an even better box that we customized with “America the Beautiful” playing every time the ballerina pops up.  The Chinese love America, and love our songs about our country!  How I wish I could have seen him and his mother when she opened this gift.  Now, haven’t we all dreamed at some time to receive a ballerina music box?  Maybe your mother has dreamed of one to.
