About Reuge Music Boxes, History – The Source of Mechanical Music
1796. Antoine Favre. The birth of mechanical music originates from the date. Trained by the master watchmakers of Geneva, the music makers raised Sainte-Croix to the rank of the world’s music box capital In Switzerland. The golden age lasted several decades, then, the attraction for large pieces gradually faded. Yet, the heritage is safe and still somewhat around today…music boxes are amazing, especially those talked about here.
Blaise Botems was guided by humanity’s continuing admiration for birds, Reuge’s musical birds. In 1848, he opened a shop in Paris selling singing birds, witch he placed in finely wrought cages and in boxes. Because it is committed to perpetuating this art, mechanical bellows, Reuge inherited the activities of the Bontems firm in 1960. Since then, the tradition lives on.
Determination, tradition and innovation: these values presided over the renewal of prestigious mechanical music boxes. At the dawn of the new millennium, the magic was reborn and the expertise of music-makers has been revived-aesthetics re-invented.
